The day after Fort Calhoun seventh-grader Gabe Namuth, 12, died during track practice, Supt. Don Johnson is offering what little detail he can about the incident.

Johnson says that Monday afternoon, a group of students were on a warm-up run to the community park — a distance of about five blocks there and back. Per school protocol, two track coaches were driving a vehicle alongside the group for safety precautions. During the run, Namuth collapsed.

"They saw him stagger and he went down," Johnson said.

Within seconds, Johnson says, one coach called for help and the second ran to Namuth's aid. At first, Namuth was still breathing — but inconsistently.

"Then he stopped," Johnson said.

The coach had immediately begun CPR. Emergency responders arrived within minutes after being dispatched at approximately 4 p.m.

Despite best efforts, Namuth was transported to CHI Health Immanuel in Omaha, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

By coincidence, a paraprofessional teacher with the school district was driving by when the incident occurred. The teacher was able to take over watching the other students while the two coaches worked with Namuth. Johnson believes the other students were unaware of the graveness in the situation.

Principal Jerry Green said Namuth was a smart, funny and well-liked student at the school.

"He had a good wit about him," Green said of the boy who could get along with anyone.

"Just a real likable kid," Green said.

Namuth is one of seven siblings: two are seniors at FCHS; one is a sophomore; two are elementary students in the district; and the oldest sibling is in college, Green said.

Green said all the Namuth kids are good students with strong grades. Gabe followed the leadership of his older siblings by participating in school athletics and the band program.

"Strong family," Green said.

Both Green and Johnson noted the immense community support during such hard times.

This is the second young death within the community in a month's time. Kodiak Kumm, a 21-year-old FCHS graduate, died March 25 after a car he was working on slipped off its jack and pinned him beneath it.

Johnson said between the two tragedies, he's seen the community rise to the occasion.

"It is amazing how they surround the families," Johnson said.

Already there is a Gabe Namuth Memorial Fund started at Great Southern Bank. Those wishing to donate can drop off or mail deposits to any Great Southern Bank branch, according to Dinah Davison, banking center manager at Fort Calhoun. Simply specify the money is for the Namuth memorial fund.

A Meal Train Plus online profile, where people can sign up to provide meals, car rides, housework and other support, set a goal to raise $500. Funds exceeded $600 in less than a day.

By Tuesday afternoon, a YouCaring.com fundraiser was at $2,060 of its $10,000 goal.

Johnson said several school districts and neighboring communities have offered their thoughts, prayers and support to FCCS during this time. He also commended his staff, who have been "rockstars" through the ordeal, he said.

By Tuesday, the district had four grief counselors present at the high school and two at the elementary school.

"We're doing the rounds. We're checking on kids," Johnson said.

Students have been making use of the grief counseling offices, Johnson said, and are handling the circumstances by simply taking care of business and getting through the day.

"You've got to try to keep some normalcy in times of tragedy," he said.

Green says he expects the next few days to be difficult for the family, but he believes they'll handle things well.

"There's a lot of support for the Namuths right now in the community," Green said.

Fort Calhoun mourns seventh-grader who collapsed at track practice By Erin Duffy / World-Herald staff writer

A steady stream of Fort Calhoun students visited grief counselors at school Tuesday in the wake of the death of a seventh-grader.

Gabe Namuth, 12, was pronounced dead on arrival at Omaha’s Immanuel Medical Center on Monday afternoon. He had been taken there by ambulance from Fort Calhoun Junior-Senior High School after collapsing at track practice.

Fort Calhoun Superintendent Don Johnson said the Namuth family is well-known in Fort Calhoun, and Gabe had several siblings in the district.

“Our teachers have been troupers,” he said. “They’re trying to go about business the best they can, considering the circumstances.”

As news of Gabe’s death reverberated through the community Monday night, neighbors and friends started dropping by the school to check on kids and comfort each other, Johnson said.

“That’s what the Fort Calhoun community is all about — just good people that care for each other,” he said.

School activities that had been planned for the remainder of Monday, including a high school concert, were canceled.

The superintendent described the Namuth family as “good, salt-of-the-earth” people who were heavily involved in the local Catholic church, St. John the Baptist.

Johnson said he taught Gabe this year in a leadership class for seventh-graders.

"When you talk about character, when you talk about leadership, you’re talking about a kid like Gabe,” he said.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a rosary service at 7 p.m., at St. John the Baptist. A funeral Mass will be at the church at 10 a.m. Friday.

Survivors include Gabe’s parents, Bruce and Gerri Namuth, and siblings Brianna, Ben, Auggy, Lizzy, Regina and Andrew, all of Fort Calhoun. A memorial fund has been set up online.

Fort Calhoun seventh-grader dies after collapsing at track practice By Susan Szalewski / World-Herald staff writer

A Fort Calhoun seventh-grader died Monday after collapsing at track practice, the Fort Calhoun Community Schools superintendent said.

About 4 p.m., the student, Gabe Namuth, was taken by ambulance from Fort Calhoun Junior-Senior High School to Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha. But he died on arrival, Superintendent Don Johnson said.

Coaches at the practice immediately began life-saving measures, and paramedics continued to try to revive Namath at the school and on the way to the hospital, he said.

“The Fort Calhoun Community Schools family mourns the loss of this young life, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the student’s family,” he said in a written statement released Monday night.

School activities planned for the remainder of Monday, including a high school concert, were canceled.

Grief counselors will be available for students and staff tomorrow, Johnson said.

He declined to release further information Monday night out of respect for the boy’s family, he said.

“We would ask everyone to join us in supporting this family in their time of need.”
