Find Jeppe Skow Dead, Gas Victim

Jeppe H. Skow, 85, who until a few years ago farmed near Irvington, was found dead about 8 o’clock today in his home at 2707 North Sixty-fifth street, apparently an accidental victim of gas.

Skow, police believe, rose to light burners and oven of the gas stove in the kitchen to warm the house. He fell asleep, apparently, and water on the stove boiled over, putting out the flame.

Mrs. Skow, 87, was found unconscious on the bed beside her husband by a milkman who smelled gas at the back door and came in. She was revived and taken to Nicholas Senn hospital.

A granddaughter of the Skows, Mrs. Ruth Talaga, 6520 Maple Street, said her grandfather had ordered an oil burner which was to have been installed two days ago. A delay came, and Skow decided to get along with the gas stove for a time rather than order a supply of coal.

Skow is survived by two sons, William, a farmer near Florence, and Summers, a farmer near Irvington; a daughter, Mrs. Hilda Chandler of Spring Valley, Cal.; 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Skow ….was taken to …. (newspaper clipping torn off)

Second Gas Victim Dies - Wife's Death Follows That of Husband

Seventeen hours after her husband had succumbed to accidental gas fumes, Mrs. Jeppe H. Skow, 87, died early this morning at a local hospital, victim of the same tragedy.

The Skows were found unconscious in bed at their home, 2707 North Sixty-fifth street.

Police said that Skow rose to light the burners on an oven of the gas stove in the kitchen to keep the house warm. He also put on water to heat, then went back to bed. Apparently he fell asleep and the water boiled over, extinguishing the flame.

The couple was found by a milkman at 8 a.m. yesterday, at which time Mrs. Skow was revived and taken to the hospital.

A double funeral service will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Kremer funeral home, with burial at Fort Calhoun.
