Jeanette M. Slusher, 47

Services for Jeanette Marie Slusher, 47 of rural Martell who died September 26, 1993 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Lincoln were Wednesday, September 29 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Hickman. Rev. Ron Drury officiated. Burial was in the Roca Cemetery.

Jeanette Marie Slusher was born August 16, 1946 in Beatrice, Nebraska. She was the first child of Thees and Marie Wallman.

She attended country school in Princeton and graduated from Cortland High School in 1964. She then attended Dana College, graduating cum laude in December, 1967. She received her master’s degree in counseling from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Throughout her 25 year career, she taught English and was a counselor in Blair, Adams, Waverly, Norris and Filley. She took a year off from education to work for the Nebraska Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse where she wrote a curriculum on drug and alcohol use prevention. She returned to counseling in the public schools at Everett and Park Middle Schools in Lincoln, but continued her work with drug and alcohol prevention through the “Just Say No” program.

She worked with Luther League, the Youth Service Corps and was youth coordinator for the Central District of the American Lutheran Church. The Slusher home was also open to youth involved in these activities and to international students during the 1990-91 school year while Christel Lundstrom of Finland lived with them.

For 10 years, she battled breast cancer. During these years she counseled others suffering from cancer.

While at Dana, she was inducted into the Alpha Chi Honorary Society and Who’s Who Among American College and University Students.

She was a charter member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church where she was involved in several aspects of congregational life. She taught Sunday School, Bible School and confirmation classes. She served on various church committees and was a member of the Women of the ELCA.

She married David Slusher August 25, 1967.

Survivors include her husband, David; son, Kyle; daughter, Theese, parents, Thees and Marie Wallman, all of rural Martell; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Rose Allman of Lincoln; a sister, Debra Wallman of Fremont and a sister and brother-in-law, Malinda and Bob Jepsen of Blair, and two grandsons, Aaron Jepsen and Christopher Jepsen, also of Blair.

Memorial gifts can be given to the Jeanette Slusher Memorial Scholarship at Norris High School. This scholarship will be given to a drug and alcohol free senior.

Butherus-Maser and Love Mortuary in Lincoln was in charge of arrangements.
