Matilda Sophia Hart, the daughter of Frederick Carl and Anna Katrinka (Hansen) Petersen, was born March 12, 1898 at Council Bluffs, Iowa. She died at her home in Harlan, Iowa on her birthday, March 12, 1986, at the age of 88 years.

As a young girl Matilda moved with her parents to a farm near Blair. She attended the Gardner Country School near Blair, and grew to adulthood on her parents farm. After school she worked for a short time in both Omaha and Blair.

On February 26, 1924, Matilda was united in marriage to William Milo Hart at Council Bluffs, Iowa.

After they married Mr. and Mrs. Hart lived in Blair, until 1925, when they moved to a farm near Merrill’s Grove in Shelby County, Iowa. They farmed in this vicinity until 1961, when they retired and moved into Harlan. On June 17, 1977, Mr. Hart died. Since that time Mrs. Hart has continued to live in Harlan.

Mrs. Hart was a member of the First Baptist Church in Harlan, where she was a member of the Fern Rold Circle. She was a former long time member of the Merrill’s Grove Baptist Church, and was a current member of the Fiscus Social Club, and the American Baptist Women.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Hart was preceded in death by one grandson Hunter Dahlof, two brothers William and Jorg, and one sister Amanda.

She is survived by one daughter Barbara (Mrs. Howard) Dahlof of Walnut, Iowa; one son, Marvin Hart of Des Moines, Iowa; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren; one sister Anna Thompson of Blair, Nebraska; one brother Walter Petersen of Blair, Nebraska; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 15, 1986, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. John M. Leggett of the First Baptist Church in Harlan officiating.

Interment was in the Merrill’s Grove Cemetery, Shelby County, Iowa, with Victor Julius, Marion Olsen, Edward J. Jensen, George A. McKnabb, and Calvin Bartelson all serving as Honorary Casket Bearers, and Timothy Hart, James Carlson, Robert Petersen, William L Kiger, Kenneth Thompson, and Kenneth H. Petersen all serving as Casket Bearers.

Pauley Funeral Home in Harlan was in charge of arrangement.
