Richard Edward Hartman was born September 7, 1941, at Gordon to Edward and Thelma (Gehrig) Hartman, and died July 1, 1987 at his home in Ogallala.

When he was in the fourth grade, the family moved to Herman, where he graduated from high school in 1959.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps, but was discharged for medical reason a few months later.

After working in Blair and Tekamah, he went to Gordon, where he met and married Anita Myers. Five children were born to this union.

Hartman managed a service station, then worked in law enforcement in Gordon and in Blair until health problems caused his retirement.

He moved his family to Chadron in 1974 and to Minnesota in 1977. He returned to Nebraska in 1980, and in 1982 was married to Elaine Lulow.

He was a lifetime member of Tri-State Old Time Cowboy’s and American Rifleman’s Association, and worked with Gordon Handicapped Outreach.

He enjoyed fishing and craft work, music and visiting with friends.

He had accepted Christ several years ago and was a member of the Methodist Church, though he attended churches of various denominations. He deeply appreciated the Lord’s care for him, and listened often to religious music, from country gospel to classical.

After living in Colorado and Arkansas, he returned to Nebraska in 1985. He and Elaine moved to Ogallala in February of 1987.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1983.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine; mother, Thelma Hartman of Gordon, sons, Wayne, of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, and Craig of Alexandria, Minnesota; three daughters, Lynell, Becky and Jolene of Bertha, Minnesota; his sister, Jerrilyn (Mrs. Myron) Malmberg of Gordon; two brother, James of Gordon and Roger of Hay Springs, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. F. P. Hans of Gordon.

Memorial services were held Monday, July 6, 1987 at the Wesleyan Gospel Chapel. Pastor Elmer Knee and Father Uzueta shared the service.

Kenneth Hutson was soloist and Judith Zuver, Pianist.

Chamberlain-Gates were in charge of the service with interment in the Gordon Cemetery.
