Lloyd E. Scheer, 88

Lloyd E. Scheer, 88, of Nebraska City, died Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at the Ambassador in Nebraska City. Funeral services were Saturday, March 5, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nebraska City. Graveside interment services were held at the Grace Lutheran Cemetery near Cook with military honors conducted by the U.S. Navy Funeral Honors Detail.

Lloyd E. Scheer was born on Aug. 25, 1922, near Nickerson to Herman Heinrich Edward and Johanna Friedareke (Hilgenkamp) Scheer. He was baptized on Sept. 9, 1922, and confirmed on April 5, 1936, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church north of Arlington.

He attended St. Paul's Lutheran School and Brinkman School, both north of Arlington. He received his high school equivalency certificate in December of 1955.

He entered the United States Navy on Nov. 11, 1942. He served his boot camp at Great Lakes, Ill., and then attended Aviation Electrical School for three months. He served the Naval Air Transport Squadron at Olathe, Kan., and was honorably discharged as an aviation electrician's mate first class on March 19, 1946.

He was a member of the American Legion Bickel-Nelson Post #360 in Cook, where he served as commander, adjutant and service officer.

On June 22, 1947, he married Verona L.C. Oetken at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cook. After their marriage, they lived in Fremont, where Mr. Scheer worked as an electrical contractor. In 1950, they moved to Cook, where he operated an appliance shop, and wiring, heating, and plumbing business. He was appointed postmaster of Cook in June 1956 and served there for 27 ½ years, before retiring in 1984 due to health problems. He was a member of the National Association of Postmasters of the U.S. and served as Nebraska State president in 1979. He also trained postmasters in the southeast Nebraska area. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and worked at Gude Mortuary.

His religion was a very important part of his life and he was very active in the Cook community. He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nebraska City. When he lived in Cook, he was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. While a member there, he served as chairman, secretary, financial secretary, and Sunday School superintendent. He was the electrician when Grace Lutheran Church was built in 1950. He was a member of the Cook Commercial Club, the fire department, the village board, rescue squad, Yesterday's Kids and helped with Meals-on-Wheels.

He is survived by his wife, Verona, of Nebraska City; three children: Loren L. and Mary Scheer of Phoenix, Ariz., Ralph E. and Kathryn Scheer of Cook, and Wanda L. and Douglas Wilnes of Lincoln; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lilly Sperling and Meta Scheer, and an infant brother, Henry.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nebraska City or the Grace Lutheran Church in Cook.

Gude Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.
