Samuel Elmer Lingo was born at Linesville, Ia., on Oct. 18, 1902 and died Sept. 19, 1988 at the age of 86.

He was raised on a farm in Page County, Ia., where he graduated from a local high school. After a period of farming with his father in South Dakota, he graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1927.

He taught vocational agriculture in high schools for several years, then became a county extension agent in Hayes County and Thurston County prior to moving to Blair. He was the Washington County Extension Agent from 1944 to 1965, when he retired.

In 1934, he married Ruth E. Ranney of Weeping Water, who died in 1975. They had two children. In 1981 he married Marjorie Pease Albert of Blair, who survives him.

He also is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Lunner of West Linn, Oregon; a son, Robert S. of Burke, Virginia; and two granddaughters, Tracy and Robyn Lingo.

In his years as county agent, Lingo actively promoted such new advances as the use of hybrid corn in the 1930’s. He introduced the first weed killers and farm insecticides, as well as the first commercial fertilizers, in Washington County.

He was recognized for his strong 4-H program, and in 1965 received an Award for Agricultural Achievement from Ak-Sar-Ben for this program. In 1982 he was recognized by the Washington Feeders Association for his service to the county’s agriculture.

He was president of the Nebraska County Agents Association in 1948 and served on several committees of the National Agents Assocation, from which he received a Distinguished Service Award n 1951.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Walter M. and Bartie Lingo. He is survived by a brother, Sedley M. Lingo of Loveland, Colorado; and sister Florence Wildasin of Corona, California.

He was a member of the F and A Masons, joining a lodge in Nehawka, Ne., in 1929 and received his 50-year Master Mason pin at the Masonic Lodge in Blair in 1979. While in Blair he was active in the United Methodist Church, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, and Riverview Grange, and a lifetime member of the University of Nebraska Alumni Association.
