Mrs. M.P. Lyons whose death occured at the residence of her son, H.E. Lyons, at Washington, Nebr., Feb. 12, 1916, marks the passing of one of Nebraska's oldest pioneers, being a resident of this state for sixty-five years.

Mrs. Lyons was born in Indianapolis, Ind. July 27, 1835

Later moving to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she was married to John J. Lyons. They immediately moved to Nebr., via St. Louis, and from there up the Missouri river to Fort Omaha. Arriving in the autumn of 1851.

Shortly after the arrival they moved to the western part of Washington county, where they took up a homestead, and Mrs. Lyons had made her home in this community until her death.

Mrs. Lyons death was preceded by her husband, Jan. 1, 1879 and her son Edward J. Lyons, Nov. 11, 1914. She is survived by three children, a daughter, Mrs. Chas. Barnes, of Mortlatch, Sask. Canada, and two sons, Chas. F. Lyons, of Seattle, Washington, and H.E. Lyons, of Washington, Nebr., nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The deceased has been a member of the Christian church for the past forty years, and has always taken an active part in church work. She was an active member in the Ladies Aid Society here, and five years ago, when the new church was built, Mrs. Lyons was the first one to turn a spade of sod, and the spade was in her possession at the time of her death.

The funeral was held in the church, Monday afternoon, Feb., 14. A large concourse of friends being present to pay their last tribute of respect. All business houses being closed during the services. There was many beautiful floral offerings.

Interment being in the Elk City cemetery, beside her husband.
