Mildred D. Havel, 89, of Arlington, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at the Hooper Care Center in Hooper.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont. Interment will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the Wilber Czech Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to services at the church.

Mildred D. “Millie” Langpaul was born June 3, 1919, in Omaha to James and Julia (Bagil) Langpaul. She lived in Omaha for several years until moving to Wilber. She was a 1937 graduate of Wilber High school and attended Peru State College and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She taught in rural schools in Nebraska for five years and then did accounting work for several businesses while living in Omaha, Denver, Colo., and Lincoln.

On Nov. 7, 1949, she married Joseph Havel in Wilber. After her marriage, the couple lived in Wilber, where Mrs. Havel worked with her husband in their clothing store. She later was the head of the feed and grain section of the ASCS office (now called the Farm Service Agency) that established allotments, yield and bases on 2,000 farms in Saline County. She served in that capacity for 23 years, retiring in 1976. In later years, she served as caregiver for her mother. In 1994, she moved to rural Arlington to live with her daughter. She had lived at Nye Square, Nye Court and Shalimar Gardens, and had moved to the Hooper Care Center in September of 2008.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont; was active in the Fremont Christian Women’s Group; was a former longtime member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilber; a 45-year member of the Altar Society; 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and at Wilber; and was a newspaper correspondent for the Southern Nebraska Register, a Catholic newspaper.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret “Marg” and Larry Fuchs of Arlington; three grandchildren; and a sister, Irene Schafer of Columbia, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in November of 1993; and numerous brothers-and sisters-in-law.

Memorials are suggested to the Bergan Catholic Schools Elementary Building Fund in Fremont.
