Philip A. Howland, 70

Philip A. Howland, 70, died Thursday, March 17, 2011, at Kansas City Hospice House after battling amyloidosis.

Memorial services were Monday, March 21, at the Church of the Resurrection, in the Wesley Chapel, in Leawood, Kan., and will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, at Morning Star Lutheran Church, 331 S. 85th Avenue in Omaha.

Philip Alan Howland was born March 26, 1940, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Howard and Mildred (Bremholm) Howland. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa, he went on to the University of Omaha, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in 1963. He obtained his CPA designation from the Nebraska State Board of Accounting in 1969 and was a founding partner of Sweet and Associates, PC up until his retirement in 2010.

Mr. Howland served as treasurer for many organizations including Morning Star Lutheran Church, the Nebraska Chapter of Safari Club International, Morning Star Lutheran Church Pre-School, and Demolay.

He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, golfing, and especially spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dianna; daughters and son-in-law, Julie Howland of Jersey City, N.J., and Debra and John Burgess of Overland Park, Kan.; son, Douglas Howland of Prairie Village, Kan.; brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Linda Howland of Blair; sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Ron Briggs of West Point; grandchildren Olivia and Owen Burgess of Overland Park; nieces, nephews, cousins and his special cousin, Nancy Darst.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson Logan Thomas Howland Burgess.

Memorials are suggested to Logan's Landing at the Church of the Resurrection, Morning Star Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, or the amyloidosis research fund.
