CHAS. HAYNES, 91, WHO ONCE OPERATED RIVER FERRY, DIES

Charles Haynes, who operated a ferryboat on the Missouri River here for 17 years before the Blair Bridge was built in 1929, died Febr. 16 in California. He was 91 years old.

From 1912 to 1929 Mr. Haynes’ ferry was a picturesque sight as it carried thousands of automobiles across the river at half a dollar per car.

On a few occasions the ferry broke down in midstream and drifted around the lower bend of the river before being repaired. But for the most part the ferry operated faithfully and many persons drove to the place to ride across the river and back for the novelty.

The advent of the bridge just 100 feet north of the ferryboat landing spelled the doom of Mr. Haynes’ enterprise.

Funeral rites for the aged ex-Blairite were held in California. The body was then returned to Blair to the Campbell Mortuary, accompanied by two daughters, Mrs. Clara Thompson and Mrs. Hazel Metcalf. Interment took place at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Blair Cemetery. All the children were able to be here except Verner Haynes, who lives at Kingman, Ariz.

Charles Haynes was born July 22, 1857, at Rochester, Minn. He and Addie Morrill were married in Burt County, Nebr., Jan. 4, 1881. They lived east of Blair many years. Mrs. Haynes died in 1936.

Surviving Mr. Haynes are two sons, Ray Haynes of Joliet, Ill., and Verner Haynes of Kingman, Ariz.; and four daughters, Mrs. Eva Noyes, Mrs. Clara Thompson, Mrs. Nell Whittaker (with who he made his home) and Mrs. Hazel Metcalf, all of Los Angeles. Two children preceded him in death.

Mrs. Neil Tyson of Blair is a sister-in-law.
