Voted "Mother of the Year"

Vivian C. Gutschow, 84, of Fremont, died Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Arbor Manor in Fremont. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, at the First United Methodist Church in Fremont. Interment will be at 12:30 p.m. at the Blair Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., and will also be held one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church. Vivian C. McDonald was born Feb. 28, 1927, on her grandparents’ farm in Blair to Glen and Helen (Olson) McDonald. She grew up in Blair and Omaha, attending Blair Schools through seventh grade and then graduating from Omaha North High School in 1944. She graduated from business school in 1946.

She lived in Norfolk and in Sioux City, Iowa, where she worked in the offices of the Union Pacific Railroad for two years, and also worked as a comptometer clerk for two years at Butternut Bakery. She moved to Fremont in 1960.

In 1972, she began working as a veterinary assistant for Dr. Charles Hall, and remained there for 12 years. She worked for Nebraska Job Service for three years, and then as a home health care worker for 14 years, retiring in 2008.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fremont, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary No. 200 of Fremont for 35 years. She was voted “Mother of the Year” in 2002. She was also a 40-year member of the Eight to Ten Extension Club.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Nancy Gutschow of Fremont, Dale and Pam Gutschow and Terry and Brenda Gutschow, all of Omaha; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Lee McDonald.

Memorials are suggested to the Dodge County Humane Society.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Fremont with the Rev. Greg Hall officiating. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. today at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time Tuesday at the church. Burial will be 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in Blair City Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Dodge County Humane Society.
