Services for Fred A. Helm, 68 who died at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha June 15, 1992 were Wednesday, June 17 at Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home. Burial was in Fort Calhoun Cemetery.

Fred Helm was born in Omaha to Fredrick A. and Violet v. Miller Helm on June 10, 1924.

He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served as tank commander for the 735th Tank Battalion, Company D, until his discharge in 1945. He was called to service in 1950 during the Korean War and served at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri in the Sixth Armored Division until 1951.

He was employed for many years as an auto mechanic for Dewey Chevrolet in Omaha. In 1959 he became owner and operator of “Helm’s Automatic Transmission Garage” on North 30 St. in Omaha until his retirement in 1979.

In 1958 he built his home and moved his family to Nashville, Nebraska, where he resided until his death.

His earlier years included building and racing stock cars (No.7) at Playland Park and Sunset Speedway and then micro-midgets at Twin Arrow Speedway.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 10 and American Legion Post No. 348, both in Fort Calhoun.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Venita Helm Clark.

He is survived by his wife, Lucretia; son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Frieda Helm of Nashville; daughters and son Denise and Kenny Kaiser of Nashville and Debra and Keith Ahrens of Blair; brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Gene Logan, Valinda, California; step-son Victor Wooldridge, Webb, Iowa; step-daughter, Dawn Wooldridge, Sioux City, Iowa and four grandchildren, Jessica Helm, Rachael Ahrens, Rebecca Ahrens and Kristopher Ahrens.

Pallbearers were Keith Ahrens, Dan Helm, Kenny Kaiser, Bill Klabunde, Dale Logan and Bob Ridner.

Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
