J. E. Helms passed away Thursday, March 1st at 2:15 p.m. the victim of a heart attack. He had been ailing for some time and had been under the care of a physician but the end came unexpectedly.

He was born in Indiana, October 8th, 1869 and was thus past 81 years of age at his death. They family moved west when he was a year old settling in this county where he grew to manhood.

On January 7, 1891 he was married to Ethel Warrick, the ceremony being performed at the home of the bride’s parents four miles north of Blair. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Helms, Harold of Knob Noster, Missouri; Donald of Waubay, South Dakota and Mrs. Eva Williams of Omaha and these with the wife survive him. Also six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He lived a full life. His chosen avocation was farming. He farmed in South Dakota for twenty years and then moved to Colorado. Five years ago they moved to Blair that they might be with Mrs. Helms’ sister, Mrs. D. A. Compton.

On January 7th they celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. To have lived together in happy cooperation for sixty years is not given to many.

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 4th from the Bendorf Funeral home with Rev. Kersey of the Christian Church officiating and interment was made in the Blair Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Prentice Smith, Gifford Compton, Everett Lamb, Clark Lippincott, Hans Petersen and Herbert Nielson.

J.E. Helms Dies at 81

RESIDENT OF BLAIR AND COUNTY MOST OF HIS LIFE DIED THURSDAY

James E. Helms, 81, of 506 West Washington Street, who had lived practically all his life in Blair and Washington County, died last Thursday.

The body was taken to the Bendorf Funeral Home. Services were held there at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, in charge of the Rev. Ralph Kersey of the Christian Church, and burial followed in Blair Cemetery. Pallbearers were Prentice Smith, Everett Lamb, Gifford Compton, Clark Lippincott, Hans Peterson and Herbert Nelson.

Mr. Helms was born in Rushville, Ind., Oct. 8, 1869, and came to Nebraska at an early age. He farmed for many years.

Surviving him are his wife, Ethel; two sons, Harold V. Helms of Knob Noster, Mo., and Donald H. Helms of Waubay, S.D.; one daughter, Mrs. Joseph L. Williams (Eva) of Omaha; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
