Elizabeth Anne (Betty) Hemphill, 65, died of cancer at her home in Hawaii on August 5. Mrs. Hemphill was the wife of Col. Robert F. Hemphill, USAF (Ret.) formerly of Blair; the daughter-in-law of the late Dr. W. F. Hemphill of Omaha; and the sister-in-law of Professor Earl and Janet Jenkins of Lincoln.

Mrs. Hemphill was born in Ft. Collins, Colorado and grew up in Scottsbluff. She was a graduate of Nebraska University and George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Hemphill was an author specializing in Japanese and Christian themes and women’s issues. She lived in Japan for over twelve years, accompanying her husband on military assignment, and she drew upon this experience to publish three biographies of prominent church workers in Japan. She later published a volume of feminist poetry.

Mrs. Hemphill was also active in community affairs, serving as Councilor and Trustee of Japan International Christian University, and later as Hawaii State President of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). In 1982 she was honored by the YWCA for outstanding community leadership.

Mrs. Hemphill is survived by her husband, Robert, of Hawaii; three children, Bob, Gia, and David; and four grandchildren. Memorial services were conducted in Hawaii and in Alexandria, Virginia, where her ashes are being laid to rest.
