Survived by wife, Frances M. Loftis, Seward; daughters and spouses, Nancy L. Loftis, Lincoln; Sandra and Larry Welhs, Wasilla, AK; Karen K. Loftis and Eric Johnson, Overland Park, KS; grandchild, Connor Walhs; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Helen and Carl Launer, Omaha; Ruth and Larry Nelson, Arlington; Betty and Dale Finch, Page, AZ; brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Janet Loftis, Blair; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

VISITATION Saturday, 9-4pm and Sunday, 1-8:30 pm with family greeting friends from 4-6 pm at Zabka Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Monday. ALAN G. LOFTIS, 73

(picture) Alan G. Loftis, 73, of Seward, died Aug. 6, 2008. Services were Monday, Aug. 11, at the United Methodist Church in Seward. Masonic services were conducted by the Oliver Lodge No. 38 A.F. & A.M. of Seward. Interment was in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln.

Alan George Loftis was born Aug. 9, 1934 on the family farm in Washington County to Leonard and Mary (Skinner) Loftis.

In 1950, at the age of 16, he graduated from Herman High School. He then attended the University of Nebraska on a scholarship, where he was a member of the ROTC and received his degree in agricultural economics. Following graduation, he served in the United States Army, attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

On May 29, 1955, he married Frances Mae Jurica in Lincoln. The couple had three daughters.

In 1961, the family moved to Seward, where he was a farm loan representative for Travelers Insurance. After 28 years, he retired from Travelers and established his own business as an appraiser, specializing in agricultural and rural properties and was actively engaged in the industry. In the early 1980s, he purchased an 80-acre tract near Milford, which he farmed.

Mr. Loftis was recognized by the UNL Agricultural Economics/Agri/Business Club with the 1994 “Service to Agriculture Award” for his long time commitment to their Protégé Program.

He was inducted into the Seward County Agricultural Hall of Fame. For more than 20 years, he served as a member of the Seward City Council, where he was president for many of those years, and was currently serving his sixth year as a member of the Seward Civic Center Commission.

His professional memberships included the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers; and on the Ethics and Peer Review Committees, both on the state and national level.

He was also a member of the Seward United Methodist Church; charter member of the Seward Kiwanis Club; chairman of the Ag Committee; Division Lt. Gov. of Nebraska-Iowa district in 1981-1982; and was awarded the George Hixson Fellow in 1998; Oliver Lodge No. 38 A.F. & A.M.; and the Seward Magazine Club.

He is survived by his wife, Frances, of Seward; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Loftis of Lincoln; Sandra and Larry Weihs of Wasilla, Alaska; and Karen Loftis and Eric Johnson of Overland Park, Kan.; one grandchild; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Helen and Carl Launer of Omaha; Ruth and Larry Nelson of Arlington; Betty and Dale Finch of Page, Ariz.; brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Janet Loftis of Blair; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Tom Loftis; and sister, Barbara Loftis.
