MADS MORTENSEN PASSES AWAY

Mads Mortensen died in an Omaha hospital at 7:15 yesterday morning, the result of an automobile accident which occurred at the Lake Street intersection of the boulevard Monday morning. Mr. Mortensen had taken his wife to a physician’s office down town in his car and was taking her sister to her home, when another car approached on Lake Street. Although he turned his car to avoid a collision the other car struck his. Mr. Mortensen was taken to a hospital, but his injuries were so severe that the physicians could not express any hope for his recovery. His sister-in-law was also injured, but will recover.

Mr. Mortensen was one of the best known and most highly respected men in this section. He and his splendid family resided on the farm in the Garryowen district for many years, removing to Omaha five years ago. He retained the farm and came to Calhoun frequently. Beside his wife he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Guy Slader, Mrs. Wm. Steyer, Mrs. Arthur Bauman and Miss Olga, and one son, Charles.

Although 80 years old Mr. Mortensen was alert and active in body and mind, and his host of friends in Washington County will indeed miss the hearty handclasp and cheery presence of this grand citizen. His earthly life has ended, but the splendid example of integrity, constructiveness and right living set by Mads Mortensen will be a living thing from which generations will benefit.

The funeral will be held from the residence, 6125 North 24th st., at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon.

PIONEER LOSES LIFE IN ACCIDENT

Mads Mortensen, an old and highly respected pioneer of this county, was fatally injured in an automobile accident in Omaha, and passed away Wednesday morning, August 1, at an Omaha hospital whence he had been taken following the accident.

Mr. Mortensen lived near Ft. Calhoun for many years, retiring about five years ago and moving with his family to Omaha. He, however, retained his land interests in this county and was a frequent and welcome visitor to his old hometown.

A report states that on the fateful morning Mr. Mortensen had taken his wife to a physician’s office downtown in his car, and was taking her sister to her home when another car collided with his. His sister-in-law was hurt but it is thought she will recover.

Besides his wife, he leaves four daughters, Mrs. Guy Slader, Mrs. Wm. Steyer, Mrs. Arthur Bauman and Miss Olga and one son, Charles.

The deceased was past eighty years of age, but active and vigorous and full of enthusiasm and good cheer. His many friends in Ft. Calhoun and Washington county regret to learn of his sudden death and will miss his presence among them.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 4, from the Omaha residence.
