WAYNE WARDEN LOFTIS, 96

Wayne Warden Loftis, 96, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at the Tekamah Health & Rehab Center in Tekamah.

Services were Monday, Feb. 7 at the Herman Legion Hall in Herman. Burial was in the Tekamah Cemetery.

Wayne Warden Loftis was born Dec. 10, 1903 to Frank and Lilian (Fletcher) Loftis on the family farm west of Herman in Washington County. He graduated from Herman High School in 1922 as valedictorian of his class.

He was a land surveyor in Washington and Burt counties for the farm program. He also farmed until his retirement.

He joined the New England Baptist Church as a boy and was a member of the Herman Federated Church and the Landmark Masonic Lodge No. 222, where he held the position of secretary for 45 years.

He was also a member of the Herman Eastern Star No. 216. He held the Jordan Medal for the longest membership and was also the oldest member of the lodge. He was recently honored at a ceremony, where he received a 70-year pin and certificates for being a member of both organizations.

He enjoyed gardening and growing a small orchard of fruit trees, which included peaches, apples and pears.

He is survived by his sister, Birdie Viola Hovendick of Tekamah; nephew, Earl Hovendick and his wife, Pat of Mesa, Ariz.; niece, Ria Hovendick of Tekamah; and numerous gret-nieces and great-nephews.

Memorials are suggested to Tekamah Fire and Rescue and The American Diabetes Association.

Hamel-Peck-Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah was in charge of arrangements.
