BLAIR MAN'S MOTHER BURIED

Funeral services were held Friday, March, 19, at Canton Lutheran Church, Canton, South Dakota, for Gladys. E. Hernes, who died at her home March, 16, 1982.

Gladys Evelyn Hernes was born September 28, 1903, in Garfield Township, Clark County, South Dakota, to Lars and Brynhild Lande Kloster. She was baptized and confirmed at Clark Center Lutheran Church.

She received her education at McLain Grade School and Clark High School. She attended nurses training at the Lutheran Hospital in Watertown, South Dakota, for one year and was a graduate of Augustana Academy Canton, South Dakota in 1927.

She taught school for three years in Hosmer, South Dakota and Clark South Dakota.

On October 6, 1920, she married Alfred S. Hernes at her mother’s home. They farmed in Clark County for a short time before moving to Naples, South Dakota, where they operated a hardware and grocery store. In November 1945, they moved to Canton, South Dakota.

She was an active member of the Canton Lutheran Church and participated in many civic activities. In 1969, she was selected Merit Mother of South Dakota.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, two brothers and one grandson.

She is survived by her husband, Alfred of Canton, South Dakota; seven sons, Leslie, Pierpont, South Dakota; Arvin, Blair; Joel, Alexander, North Dakota; David, Glenville, Minnesota; Selmer, Lennox, South Dakota; Paul, Pueblo, Colorado; and Burnett, Algonquin, Illinois. One sister, Mrs. Lillian Wika, Clark, South Dakota; and one brother, Walter Kloster, Clark, South Dakota; nine grandsons, eleven granddaughters and one great-grandson also survive her.

Pallbearers were her seven sons. Anderson Funeral Home, Canton, was in charge of arrangements.
