Harold Gene Bunz was born on May 21, 1932 in Bennington, Nebraska to Peter and Annie (Puls) Bunz. He grew up on family farms in the Bennington, Elkhorn and Blair areas, attending Bennington grade school and 2 years of high school before moving to Elkhorn and graduating from Elkhorn High School in 1950. Gene developed his love of farming from an early age, spending countless hours working with his grandfather. Gene was stricken with polio as a child but never allowed it to define him. He worked hard and always found a way or overcome his difficulties.

After graduation, Gene went right to the farm, first helping his father and later on his own on the family farm near Blair. He spent his life farming, raising livestock and milking cows. Gene enjoyed travelling, fishing and deer hunting but most of all he loved to spend time with his brother Lee’s family. He was an easy going, independent, hardworking man with a stubborn streak. Gene was an avid St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan and he enjoyed pork chops and breakfast at Al’s Café in Fremont. With age came more health problems and Gene moved to Ridgewood in Bennington for a few years before transferring to Brookstone Meadows in Elkhorn and finally Montclair Nursing Home.

Gene passed away at Montclair Nursing Home in Omaha, Nebraska on May 4, 2016 at the age of 83 years, 11 months and 13 days. He was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Annie. Gene is survived by brother and sister-in-law Lee and Kathy Bunz of Omaha; nephew and niece Scott and Danielle Bunz of Omaha; great nephews Jacob and Joseph.
