Dick and Shirley raised their children on the family farm west of Blair. He maintained his Angus cow herd while operating his contract painting business. In the 1950's, Dick owned two race cars that competed at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Dick drove one of the race cars and Virgil Wrich raced the other. He enjoyed deer hunting in Wyoming and fishing trips to Minnesota. He enjoyed volunteering his time by painting at Country Bible Church. Dick was always lending a helping hand to friends and family.

When Dick retired from his painting career, he began to focus on maintaining his farm. The centerpiece was the restoration and painting of his large red barn. He also enjoyed delivering flowers and being an all-around handyman for Shirley's flower shop. He played a mean game of dominoes and always looked forward to their weekly couples Bible studies. The family will miss Dick at family gatherings, where he would make his famous hand-cranked homemade ice cream.
