Alice A. Hibbs, 93, of Blair, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at Life Care Center of Elkhorn. Funeral services were Monday, April 4, at the First United Methodist Church in Blair, with interment in the Blair Cemetery.

Alice Ada Hibbs was born Nov. 6, 1911, in Broken Bow to J. W. and Bertha (Nielsen) Williby. She graduated from Royal High School in 1931.

She attended the Nebraska Teachers College at Wayne from 1931 to 1933, and received her General Elementary State Certificate in 1934.

She married Harold Hibbs in March 1935 in Sioux City, Iowa. After the Hibbs were married they lived and farmed in Page until 1940, when they moved to Royal. In 1945, they moved to Blair. Mrs. Hibbs worked for the IGA Grocery Store for 14 years, and then went back to school at Dana to renew her teaching certificate. She received her college degree at age 60 in 1972. Her teaching career actually started in 1949 at Peaceful Hill, where she taught for one year, and she also taught many years at the Wranch School. To finish out her career, she taught 4th grade in Fort Calhoun until her retirement in 1978.

After her teaching career, Mrs. Hibbs continued tending to the needs of children, babysitting and caring for many children in the Blair area, touching the lives of many. Despite all of her broken bones and ups and downs, she babysat until the age of 88.

Mrs. Hibbs was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and Royal Neighbors. She enjoyed dancing, going out to dine with family and friends, and playing cards. She taught Sunday school at the Methodist Church for many years, and loved serving cookies and coffee to her brothers and sisters in Christ. She had a love and passion for teaching children, and was always proud of what they learned. Her entire life was spent teaching and caring for God’s children.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, LaRue and Jackie Hibbs of Omaha; daughter-in-law, Sheran Hibbs of Blair; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Lois Backman of Blair, and Marveline Eggison of Portland, Ore.; brother and sister-in-law, William and Lena Mae Williby of Blair; sisters-in-law, Ardith Reinke of Royal, and Fae Williby and Daisy Williby of Blair.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; son, Larry; brothers, Herb, Glenn, Lyle and Jim; two sisters, Delores Smith, and an infant sister; brothers-in-law, Harold and Jack Backman.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
