Olga "Dolly" Steyer Lorenzen, 87, died Wednesday Feb. 10, 1999, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha following several weeks of hospitalization.

Services were Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Gregg Miller officiating. Buurial was in the Fort Calhoun Cemetery.

Olga Steyer was born Oct. 29, 1911, to William and Mary Steyer on a farm just south of Fort Calhoun. She was born prematurely and weighed only 3 1/2 pounds and her father nicknamed her "Dolly" as she was known throughout her life.

The Steyer family moved from the Fort Calhoun area to a farm just west of 72nd Street and Highway 36 in Douglas County, where they grew vegetables and other produce for sale in the markets of Omaha. The market was located in what is now known as the "Old Market" area in Omaha, where market gardeners sold fruits, vegetables and other produce to grocers and to homemakers.

Dolly attended North High School in Omaha and was in the new school's first class of graduates attending North for all their high school years.

She attended Boyles VanSant Business School in Omaha and worked at a grain brokerage firm and then at the Federal Farm Credit Banks in Omaha. She fondly recalled lunches at the Northrop deli and coffee shop in Omaha, a longstanding tradition for offfice personnel in downtown Omaha.

Dolly met Edward H. Lorenzen of Fort Calhoun at a barn dance on the Lars Jaspersen farm and they were married on her birthday on Oct. 29, 1937. The newlyweds took up farming on a rental farm and then purchased the Lorenzen farm from Ed's parents. They raised lambs, hogs and cattle, and later concentrated on feeding cattle and raising grain crops on their farm.

They were pioneers in the soil conservation effort and were honored by the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben for family ownership of the Lorenzen farm for more than 100 years.

Dolly had a knack for remembering details, dates and events from the past and delighted in sharing with her family and friends many fond memories and family tales, especially of her growing up with her brothers and sister and of their childhood escapades. Dolly particularly enjoyed being with her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.

Dolly was a member of the Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church, the Fort Calhoun Women's Club, Naomi Chapter 121, Order of the Easter Star, Sat-ra Temple of the Daughters of the Nile, the Gingham Gals Extension Club, served on the Women's Guild of the Washington County Historical Association , and had been a volunteer at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair. She and Ed were active in the Grange and were honored by the State Grange for their service to their community and to the Grange. They were square dancers for many years with other couples from Blair and Fort Calhoun and the surrounding area.

Dolly is survived by her husband of 61 years, Edward; a daughter and son-in-law Lois A. and Paul Olson of Lakeville, Minn; sons and daughters-in-law John E. "Jack" and Joann Lorenzen of Lincoln; Philip A. and Marilyn Lorenzen of Omaha and Carl A. and Diane Lorenzen of Blair; 13 grandchildren, Jacque Scanlon, Renee Young, Richard Lorenzen, Randall Lorenzen, Sonja Brazell, Sara Olson, Eric Olson, Andrew Olson, Eliszbeth Lashley, Mark Lorenzen, Leslie Lorenzen, Jennifer Lorenzen and Matthew Lorenzen; eight great-grandchildren, Michael Scanlon, Meghan Scanlon, Matthew Scanlon, Anna Young, Allison Young, Dustin Lorenzen, Nicholas Lorenzen and Nathan Lorenzen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Christine (Mrs. Waldo) Kuruse, and brothers Harold C. Steyer, Ralph W. Steyer and Morton P. Steyer.

Memorials are suggested to the Fort Calhoun Presbyterian Church.
