EDNA SOMMERS, 101

Edna Sommers, 101, of Fremont, died Thursday, March 18, 2010, at Nye Pointe in Fremont.

The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 23, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Fremont’s Memorial Cemetery. Visitation began Monday, but will also be held one hour prior to services at the church.

Edna Kruger was born Jan. 27, 1909, on a farm northwest of Arlington to Frank and Amanda (Scheer) Kruger. She was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church north of Arlington, and on April 22, 1922, she was confirmed at the same church.

She attended a small country school for a few years, later attending St. Paul’s Lutheran School north of Arlington. She was a student at Arlington High School for one year, then attended St. John’s Lutheran College in Winfield, Kan.

On Sept. 1, 1933, she married William J. ‘Bill’ Sommers of Fremont in Chicago, Ill. The couple made Fremont their home. Mr. Sommers was the former longtime general manager of the Fremont Department of Utilities. Mrs. Sommers worked in the office of Dr. George Haslam for 12 years. She had also been a volunteer at the hospital in Fremont for many years.

She enjoyed playing bridge. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and its Ruth Circle.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Judith Ann and Mike Olson of Boone, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Norma Goesling of Fremont.

She was preceded in death by her husband in May of 2008, and by a son James, a sister and two brothers.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran School.
