Coming as a severe shock to his hundreds of friends throughout the county was the news Monday that L. D. “Ike” long, 51, prominent Herman business man and former Washington County commissioner, had died unexpectedly at his home.

Mr. Long was found dead in bed, having been stricken in his sleep.

So unexpected was the news that many friends and acquaintances at first refused to believe it, as Mr. Long had been seen on the streets of Blair only Saturday, and others had seen and talked to him in Herman on Sunday.

Mr. Long had complained several weeks ago of not feeling well, and he and Mrs. Long had gone to the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, Minn. A thorough checkup there revealed nothing apparently wrong with him and , encouraged by this, Mr. Long had been making plans to leave soon with a group of intimate friends on a trip to the Lake of the Woods country on the Canadian boundary.

With Ned Tyson, Mr. Long had for years been a partner in operation of the Tyson-Long Company of Herman, Blair and Tekamah, handling farm equipment and supplies, and operating a large fleet of oil transport trucks from the oil regions of this area. The business was one of the county’s largest.

HUGE CROWD AT FUNERAL

The funeral, with arrangements in charge of the Truhlsen Funeral Home of Herman, was held at 2 p.m. at the Herman Legion Hall, but the throng of mourners was so huge that only part of the crowd could be accommodated in the large hall. The Rev. A. W. Clarke, Arlington, former Herman Methodist pastor and for years a personal friend of Mr. Long, officiated.

Pallbearers were James Presba, Chris Korshoj, John Skinner, J. B. Jensen and Dr. W. I. Nelson, all of Herman, and Simon Korshoj of Blair. Burial was in Herman Cemetery. The American Legion post of Herman, of which Mr. Long was a member, provided a patriotic guard and an honorary firing squad.

NATIVE OF ARLINGTON

Mr. Long was born at Arlington Nov. 20, 1895. He and Alice Reid of Herman were married at Missouri Valley, Ia., June 15, 1915, and after their marriage they lived at Modale, Ia., for several months. They moved to Herman in August, 1915, and remained there until going to Omaha in 1916.

In 1917, Mr. Long enlisted in the U. S. Marines, and upon his return from Word War I service, he and his wife resided in Omaha. In 1926, he went into partnership in Herman with Ned Tyson and the partnership continued until his death this week.

Mr. Long was a county commissioner for District 3 from 1936 until 1944. He had served on many civic committees. He was a member of Charles Jackson post, American Legion at Herman and fo the 40et8 inner legion group. He belonged to Tangier Temple 168 of Omaha and to the Royal Arch Masons No. 13 of Blair, and was a Master Mason of Landmark Lodge No. 22 A.F. & A.M. at Herman. He also was a member of Herman Chapter 216, Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving Mr. Long are his wife, Alice; two brothers, Charles Long of Fremont and Earl Long of Benson, and one sister, Mrs. Pearl Fossett of Lincoln.
