Edward E. Baker, 87

World War II Veteran

Former Arlington resident Edward E. Baker, 87, of Fremont, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at the Pathfinder House in Fremont.

A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 16, at the Arlington Community Church. Interment will be at the Arlington Cemetery with military honors provided by members of VFW Post 8332 and American Legion Post 71 of Arlington.

Edward E. Baker was the son of Alfred and Cecil (Yager) Baker. He grew up in Arlington and was a 1941 graduate of Arlington High School. He served in the United States Army with the 244th Engineer Combat Battalion during World War II from March 18, 1943 to Jan. 5, 1946, serving in southern France, the Rhineland and central Europe.

After his discharge from the military, he served as a trooper with the State Patrol in Auburn and Grand Island for six years, from 1946 until 1952. He then was the terminal manager and later sales manager for Takin Brothers Transportation while living in Omaha, from 1952 until 1969. He then became a real estate broker and worked for Marshall Real Estate Agency; he later owned the Baker Real Estate Agency, which he operated until retiring in 1984. He had moved to Arlington in 1975.

On Dec. 12, 1952, he married Evelyn "Mick" Miller at Missouri Valley, Iowa.

Mr. Baker was a member of the Arlington Community Church, American Legion Post 71, was a life member of the VFW Post 8332 of Arlington, and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Post in Omaha.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Ken Killpack of Neola, Iowa, and Paula and Bill Ellsberry of Castle Rock, Colo.; son, Fred Baker of Omaha; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in May of 1999; a sister, Eleanor Waldron; and brother, Gene Baker.

Memorials are suggested to the Arlington Community Church, Arlington Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department or the Fremont Area Medical Center Hospice.

Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington is in charge of arrangements.
