Katheryn J. Echternach, 71, of Nebraska City, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebraska City.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Church of Christ, 119 N. 4th St., Missouri Valley, Iowa.

Katheryn Jane Echternach was born Dec. 19, 1931, on the family farm near Alta, Iowa, to Elmer and Kate (Harris) Schaefer. She was the youngest of nine children. She attended the Nemaha, Iowa, high school from 1945 until 1949. After graduation, she attended the Iowa state Teachers College.

In 1953, she married Verlyn “Vern” Echternach in Omaha. The couple spent most of their married life in the Omaha and Council Bluffs area until 1986, when they moved to Loveland, Iowa.

Mrs. Echternach was active in her two daughters’ activities, such as Camp Fire Leader, Job’s Daughters sponsor, and 4-H. In addition to being a homemaker, she also worked as a school cook, a Chamberof Commerce secretary, and a PBX operator. She also was interested in sewing, reading and word search puzzles.

She is survived by her husband, Verlyn, of Nebraska City; daughters and a son-in-law, Lynette and Mark Fankhauser of Stella and Terri Echternach of Honolulu, Hawaii; and four siblings.

She was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings.

Memorials suggested to the American Heart Association.

Wherry Brothers Mortuary in Humboldt is in charge of arrangements.
