Former Blair resident Catharina A. Hoelscher, 96, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, at the Tompkins Memorial Health Center in Fort Dodge.

A memorial service was held Friday, Jan. 6, at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge, and funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 7, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls, Iowa. Interment was at Northlawn Memory Gardens in Iowa Falls.

Catharina A. Hoelscher was born May 30, 1909, close to Hubbard, Iowa, to Gustav and Anna (Joens) Hoelscher. She graduated from high school in 1925 and attneded Ellsworth College and began her teaching career in 1927. She taught in Iowa schools for 13 years while at the same time obtaining her four-year degree from Iowa State Teachers College.

In 1941, she began teaching in Illinois, and spent the last 34 years of her career teaching fifth grade in Elmhurst, Ill. While teaching, she earned her master's degree from the University of Illinois.

After retirement in 1973, she lived in Iowa Falls until 1976, when she decided to live with a friend in Blair. In 1994, she and her sister decided to move to Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge, where she remained until her death.

She is survived by two nephews, Wayne Hoelscher of Minnetonka, Minn., and Neil Hoelscher of Perry, Iowa; four great-nephews; and a great-great-niece.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Laura Hoelscher Myers; and one brother, Marcus Hoelscher.
