Washington County native Howard H. Hoier, 96, of Fremont, died Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Arbor Manor in Fremont.

The funeral service was Monday, June 2, at First Lutheran Church in Fremont. Interment was in Fremont's Memorial Cemetery.

Howard H. Hoier was born July 20, 1911, in Blair to Andrew and Kirstine (Nielsen) Hoier. He grew up on a farm in the Spiker community of Washington County.

On June 10, 1936, he married Ethel Andersen at her parents' home near Arlington. They farmed in Washington County near Telbasta and Fontanelle before moving into Fremont in 1956.

After leaving the farm, Mr. Hoier was employed as a salesman for Mahnke Implement Company and Broadbent Distributing Company before retiring in 1980.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Fremont. He also belonged to the Golden K Kiwanis Club and the Fremont Eagles Aerie 200.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Karen Hoier of West Des Moines, Iowa and Allan and Kellie Hoier of Ottawa, Kan.; one daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Gene Miller of Sioux City, Iowa; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1996; brothers, Earl and Russell; and by sisters Laura Hoier and Ethel Danielmeyer.

Memorials are suggested to his church.
