Volunteerism Important to Her

Mary E. Foust, 83, of Omaha died April 23, 2011. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at the United Methodist Church, 105 N. Sycamore Ave., in Garrison, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 13, at the Phillips Funeral Home, 605 2nd Ave., in Vinton, Iowa.

Mary Poulter was born July 13, 1927, in Jefferson County, Iowa, to Dr. Robert William Poulter and Effie Mae (Ganoe) Poulter.

She married Delwyn (Del) Wayne Foust in 1954, and they made their home in the cities of Waterloo and Garrison, Iowa. Following her husband's death in 2005, she lived in Vinton, Iowa, and moved to the Omaha area in 2007 to be near family.

Mrs. Foust had two people-oriented careers, first working as a camp director and administrative council member for the Girl Scouts of America at camps located in Iowa and Missouri, and then as a teacher in the 3rd and 4th grades in LaPorte City, Iowa.

She was an active member of Garrison United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Garrison Fire Department Auxiliary, and the American Legion. Volunteerism was important to her and she spent many hours at nursing homes, elementary schools, Garrison Public Library and the Garrison Fire Department. She was a graduate of the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa, and was an avid Hawkeye fan. Her passion to family lives through the work she shared in organizing family reunions that continue today.

She is survived by her two sons and daughter-in-law, Russell and Debra of Blair, and David, of Portage, Mich.; grandchildren, Hannah, of Durham, N.H., Charles, of Sioux City, Iowa, and Kevin, of Blair.
