TROY HOLMES, 39, LOVED TO MAKE PEIPLE LAUGH by Josefina Loza, World Herald Staff Writer

When Pat Holmes' son joined the cheer squad at Fort Calhoun High School, she thought he was being absurd. But that was her Troy. He loved to squeeze a few chuckles out of people.

Troy Holmes, a fun-loving, daredevil character, was the first and only male cheerleader at the school, his mother said. He cheered during his junior and senior years of high school.

"He never cared about what other people thought," she said. "If he was having a good time, he'd laugh it off."

Holmes, who was born in Independence, Mo., and raised in Omaha, graduated from Fort CalhounHigh School in 1983. After graduation, he moved to Arizona to work as a waiter at a resort. He later moved to Florida.

"He just had a wonderful personality," she said. "He just got along with everyone."

Holmes, 39, had a series of heart attacks in April and July, and died Aug. 12, in Sarasota, Fla.

A service is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2215 Binney St.

He is survived by his father, Tom, and brothers, Tommy and Cory, all of Omaha, and his grandmother, Flora B. Daly of Sarasota.
