Betty M. Sonderup, 78

'God's Angel to All Who Needed Prayers'

Betty M. Sonderup , 78, of Blair, died May 17, 2011, at Crowell Home in Blair. Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 20, at Country Bible Church. Interment will be in the Blair Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday, at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Betty M. Nelson was born Oct. 14, 1932, in Newcastle to Harry and Pearl (Mathiesen) Nelson.

On Nov. 15, 1950, she married Ray Sonderup. The couple had three daughters. Mr. and Mrs. Sonderup were farmers from 1953 to 1969. In 1968, they moved to the Howdy Hansen farm east of Blair. In 1969, Mr. Sonderup built their gas station, Ray's Gulf, located next to the Dairy Queen in Blair. They moved to town in 1972 when the couple decided to build the Starlite Motel which Mrs. Sonderup still owned and operated.

Mrs. Sonderup was a member of Country Bible Church and VFW Auxiliary. She was very active in other churches in her younger years. She was a Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and was president of the Women's Mission group. She worked side-by-side with her husband in their ventures of farming, gas station, and motel. She enjoyed the motel the most. She treated all her customers like they were family. She enjoyed talking to them and listening to their problems. She is remembered as "God's angel to all who needed prayers and would say, ‘I can't do anything but I can pray with you.'" She had many friends, many of whom could not drive anymore, so she would keep in touch with them on the phone which was one of her favorite hobbies.

Mrs. Sonderup loved to cook and have all her family for Sunday dinner. When her health was declining and she couldn't use her hands because of the arthritis, she still enjoyed having everyone come. She was a great example for her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had loved them all and they loved her.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Loren Jones of Blair, Shirley and Steve Baker of Modale, Iowa, and Mary Erixon of Blair; five grandchildren, Matt Tighe of Cedar Rapids, Lucus and Taffy Jones of Blair, Jared and Laura Tighe of Blair, Chris and Holly Baker of Blair, and Lynette and Mike Smith of Omaha, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Blair Fire and Rescue Squad, Country Bible Church, the American Diabetes Society or The First Baptist Church.
