Robert Baker III, 22

By Emerson Clarridge World-Herald Staff Writer

Robert Baker III was a deft construction framer who helped build structures across the region.

The 22-year-old Elkhorn-area man was recalled Wednesday by his father as unusually dedicated to his work, particularly for a man in his early 20s.

While his peers might be adrift, Baker was focused.

He never missed a day of work and was often the first to the job site, said his father also named Robert Baker.

Baker was driving a pickup truck when it crashed into Papillion Creek near 180th and Blondo Streets sometime between early Sunday and Tuesday afternoon, when it was found by an Omaha police officer in a helicopter. He died along with two other people in the front seat, friends from Grand Island where he’d lived for a couple of years.

“He was a man among boys,” his father said.

Baker worked for his father, who operates a business called Priority Enterprises. Beyond construction, he spent time with his three step-siblings, taking them fishing and sledding, and with his great-grandfather.

Baker stayed in shape by working out at a gym and took good care of his house and vehicles his father said. He attended Elkhorn High School and took drafting courses at Central Community College.

His girlfriend Bailey Ellenwood, who had reported him missing to police wrote in a Facebook posting that they first dated in middle school.

“We talked about a future together, we made plans and goals together. I was his little foot. I am still holding on to every memory we shared together laughs, talks, silliness, arguing when we would go shopping because he hated it but would still go with me.”

A visitation will be held at Reichmuth Funeral Home in the Elkhorn area from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. A funeral is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick’s Church.
