Shirley N. Gnuse, 89 years, of Fremont, NE, formerly of Hooper, NE passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Fremont Health Medical Center in Fremont. Shirley was born July 15, 1927 in Burlington, Colorado to Clarence R. and Aylene V. (Nelson) Otteman.

At the age of one and a half years, she moved to Hooper. She attended school there and was a graduate of Hooper High School. She taught K- 8th grade in Dodge and Washington counties until her marriage. Shirley married Glenn H. Gnuse on August 10, 1947 at Zion Lutheran Church at Hooper. After her marriage, they moved to the family farm at Fontanelle. She worked in Hooper at her father’s real estate and insurance business for several years while raising their children. She later worked as Emergency Department Manager at Fremont Memorial Hospital, now the Fremont Health Medical Center, until her retirement.

Shirley was a very active member of Salem Lutheran Church of Fontanelle since 1950. She also was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and served as past Worthy Matron twice. She enjoyed a wide variety of activities with her family and many close friends, and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Glenn of Fremont; sons, Rodney Glenn Gnuse and wife, AnnaMarie Otteman of Omaha, Nebraska and Larry Wayne Gnuse and wife, Deb Bell of Denver, Colorado; grandson, Andrew Jared Glenn Gnuse; granddaughter, Lauren Michaela Gnuse; and four great grandchildren.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; son, Richie Gnuse in April of 1968; and brothers, Robert “Bob” Otteman, Glenn Otteman and Dewayne Otteman.

Memorial Service will be 2:00 P.M., Saturday, March 18, 2017 at Salem Lutheran Church of Fontanelle. The Rev. Allison Siburg will officiate. There will be no visitation. A private burial will be at Fontanelle Cemetery at Fontanelle.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the Order of Eastern Star or Salem Lutheran Church of Fontanelle.
