Enjoyed Dancing, Restoring Tractors and Pinochle

Glen A. Mohr, 84, of rural Bennington, died Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Omaha, with his family by his side. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Friday, June 10, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bennington. Interment will be in the German Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bennington, with the family receiving friends from 4 to 8 p.m.

Glen Arthur Mohr was born July 27, 1926, on the family farm north of Bennington to Charles and Anna (Schneekloth) Mohr. He grew up on the farm and attended District #63 country school and graduated from Bennington High School in 1944. He helped with chores around the farm and was active in 4-H and basketball. He was in the Douglas County 4-H band where he played the trombone and the accordion. He was also a 4-H leader and had a welding club.

He served in the United States Army from November 1945 to October 1946. When he first was overseas, he helped rebuild bridges over the Rhine River. He went to school for eight weeks at Epernay, France, for mechanic construction equipment, and then trained other GIs to operate and repair heavy equipment. He was a motor pool manager for four months at New Ulm, Germany. Awards received while in the Army were Good Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal. He was proud to serve his country.

He met Elvera Lamprecht at a wedding dance in Bennington shortly after he returned from the service. The couple married on Aug. 5, 1950, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Benson, and had five children. The family has always made their home in the Bennington area.

Mr. Mohr farmed his entire life, up until two weeks before his death. He also worked for the City of Omaha in the Public Works Department, Special Dispatch, and as a Conklin representative.

He enjoyed dancing, restoring tractors, pinochle club (40 years), participating in the Nebraska Great Tractor Ride, attending tractor shows and parades. For the past 22 years, he and his family have held the Mohr's Annual Threshing Picnic which he was very proud of. He was active in the Bennington American Legion Post #266, Benson Veteran of Foreign Wars, and participated in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., in 2008 to see the World War II memorial.

He was active in St. John's Lutheran Church, was a lifetime member of the South Omaha Fraternal Order of Eagles, German-American Society, Camp Creek Threshers, Carstens Farmstead, Elkhorn Valley Antique Power Association, Nebraska Antique Power Association. He enjoyed polka music, peach tea and dinner at Village Inn. After his wife's death, he did not slow down. He continued to attend dances, meeting new people and could always be seen bringing a homemade cake to a funeral luncheon.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Marlene of Arlington, and David and Jamie of Kennard; daughters and sons-in-law, Deb and Scott Albright and Deanna and Steve Hansen, all of Omaha; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson; sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Richard Musel of Bennington; brother, Dale, of Bennington; sister-in-law, Betty Mohr of Bennington; nieces, nephews and numerous friends.

In addition to his wife, Elvera, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan, and brother, Lyle.
