Melvin John Langer was born March 31, 1930 at Pierz, MN to Peter A. and Frederica (Glaser) Langer. He moved to Spalding, NE with his family in 1931. He attended Greeley County School District #10 and graduated from Spalding Academy in 1949. On December 4, 1952, he entered the United States Army, serving during the Korean War while stationed in England until his honorable discharge on January 13, 1954. He returned to Spaulding where he farmed with his father.

Melvin married Eva M. Dresch on September 5, 1955 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Primrose. The couple made their home on a farm near Spalding where Melvin continued farming. They were blessed with five children: Sharon, Shirley, Lori, Tom and Jackie. Melvin retired from farming in 2011 and continued living on the farm until April 2014, when he entered the Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Home in Albion, NE.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Church in Spalding. He enjoyed nature, woodworking, hunting, fishing and playing music on his accordion and harmonica.

Melvin is survived by his wife Eva of Spalding; four children: Sharon (John) Bopp of Grand Island; Shirley (Tom) McDonnel of Maumelle, AR; Tom (Angie) Langer of Spalding; Jackie (Scott) Voichoskie of Fullerton; son-in-law: Ken Hiner of Grinnell, IA; 11 grandchildren: Lauren Bopp of Grand Island; Mark (Sam) McDonnel of Benton, AR; Aaron (Stacy) McDonnel and Stacyi (Matt) Wesolowski of Maumelle, AR; Hannah (Erik) Bebb of Hill City, KS; Miranda and Marissa Langer of Spalding; Jaylie and Jeran Bentz of Omaha, NE; Alex and Sydnie Voichoskie of Wilcox, NE; eight great-grandchildren: Alexander Bopp, Griffin Oates, Clark and Anna McDonnel, Triston and Zoey Wesolowski, Abigail Bebb, and Sarah Bentz; two sisters: Eileen Bauer and Leona Schmidt, both of Spalding; one sister-in-law, Helen Langer of Spalding; along with many other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter Lori Hiner; a brother Ambrose Langer; an infant sister Evelyn; and brothers-in-law: Rich Bauer and Francis Schmidt.
