Herman Hovendick, 81, of Washington County, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999.

Services were Monday, Feb. 8, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Orum.

Herman Hovendick was born June 21, 1917, on the family farm south of Blair, to Frank and Elfrieda (Trantow) Hovendick.

He attended Maney School and married Edna Rohwer in Omaha on March 6, 1943.

He farmed the same land since 1946.

In 1990, he was honored as the Master Conservationist by the Nebraska Chapter of the Sierra Club for his contributions to the environment and his lifelong dedication to sound farm management. He was distinguished for his positive impact on the environment and leadership in sustainable agriculture before it became popular.

He was an active member of the Sierra Club and in 1989, participated in a Sierra Club wilderness outing to build a seven-mile loop along the Ice Age National Scenic Trail in Chequamegon National Forest in Wisconsin.

The group honored him by naming a small lake at one end of the trail after him.

He volunteered many hours to the Washington County Recycling Center in Blair.

He designed and perfected a can crusher made of recycled parts from old combines, balers, grain drill and tires, and was known as “The Tin Man” for his efforts.

He is survived by his wife, Edna, daughter, Jan Kloke of Omaha; daughter, Maxine and husband, David Dougherty of Ralston; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Debby Hovendick of Blair; six grandchildren, Troy and Trevor Dougherty, Mike Rye, Nikkie Roark, and Shawn and Chantal Hovendick; four great-grandchildren, Morgan and Josh Rye and Calvin and Brittany Hovendick; and sister Opal Lambrecht.

Memorials are suggested to the Washington County Recycling Center or Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangement.
