Howard Herman Hovendick
Died on 4/11/2002

Howard Hovendick, 87, of Tekamah, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.

Funeral services were Saturday, April 13, at First Baptist Church in Tekamah with the Rev. Steven P Eggum officiating. Interment was at the Tekamah Cemetery.

Howard Herman Hovendick was born June 29, 1914, to Charles and Elora (Fletcher) Hovendick, on the family farm northwest of Herman in Burt County.

He received his education at the Crawford School, which he attended through the 10th grade.

On Aug. 28, 1935, he married Fae Roth at her parents’ home in Tekamah. The couple lived most of their married lives on a farm northwest of Herman. In addition to farming, Mr. Hovendick also worked many years with the ASC office as a compliance supervisor. His jobs included measuring land, checking grain bins and building terraces throughout Burt County.

The couple retired in 1981, when they moved to Tekamah, where he enjoyed restoring older IHC tractors and pickup trucks. The farming always stayed with him, as he continued to go to the farm quite regularly to walk the fields and to continue with his conservation work.

During their 60 years of marriage, the Hovendicks enjoyed taking many trips throughout the United States, spending many winters in their little home-away-from-home in Tucson, Ariz.

Mr. Hovendick’s biggest enjoyment in his life besides his family was working for his church and for his Father in heaven. He served as deacon, trustee, Sunday School teacher, sponsor of the Baptist Youth Fellowship and also served on the planning board for the new church building.

He was a dedicated husband, and cared for his wife for many years until her death in 1995. He was an inspiration to this family and will always continue to be so.

He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, John Hovendick, Jack and Linda Hovendick, all of Tekamah, four grandsons, nine great-grandchildren, whom he said he would dearly miss, a brother, Vernon of Oakland, brother-in-law and wife, Bob and Alice Roth of King City, Ore.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester and Chester, three sisters-in-law, Mabel, Dorothy, and Marjorie, and an infant sister.

Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice.

Hamel-Peck-Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah was in charge of arrangement.
