Active Volunteer at the WC Recycling Center

Ruth E. Flake, 83, of Blair, died Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Blair.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 20, at First Lutheran Church in Blair. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Interment will be at Vacoma Cemetery in rural Arlington.

Ruth E. McKenzie was born Oct. 7, 1927, at Neligh to Joseph and Bernice (Snodgrass) McKenzie. She moved with her family to Fremont at the age of 7 and was a graduate of Fremont High School.

On April 8, 1950, she married Darrell E. Flake in Fremont. The couple farmed north of Arlington until moving to Blair in 1997. Mrs. Flake had been residing at the Good Shepherd Home since April 2011.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church at Blair and, since moving to Blair, was an active volunteer at the Washington County Recycling Center and the Clothing Barn.

She was a member of the Washington County Johnson Jills Extension Club. She was a member of the former St. John's Lutheran Church at Vacoma until it closed. She was a former member of Salem Lutheran Church at Fontanelle and the Ladies Aid, and taught Sunday School and Bible School for several years.

She is survived by her husband, Darrell; son, Louis Edward Flake of Baltimore, Md.; daughters and sons-in-law, Ann Louise and C. Lee "Butch" Roll of Kansas City, Mo., Rebecca Sue Flake of Alexandria, Va., Carol Marie and Thomas Murray of Clinton, Md., Sharon Kay and David Axelrod of Wilmette, Ill., and Pamela Ruth and James Linke of Louisville; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers and sister-in-law, Charles and Margie McKenzie of Fremont, and Gene McKenzie of Springdale, Ark.; sister, Ellen Durst of Holton, Kan.; former sister-in-law, Sandra McKenzie of Fremont; former daughter-in-law, Susan Coates of Belcamp, Md.

Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington is in charge of arrangements.
