Former Blair Man Dies in California

Blair friends of the Boggs family who have been residents of California for the past fifteen years, were notified the first of the week of the death of Mr. Boggs, which occurred at the family home, Long Beach, Calif., at 4 a.m., Sunday, October 6, 1918, after an illness of three weeks.

John Boggs was born in Clarion County, Penn., in 1836, and was at the time of his demise 82 years of age. He resided for a number of years at Shawnee, Okla., and for a time was president of the Ashur, Okla., State Bank. He lived together with his wife and children in Blair for a number of years. He was sheriff of Washington County for four years. He also served as postmaster for one term, commending in 1890.

He spent several weeks in Blair, accompanied by Mrs. Boggs, during the past summer, and returned to Long Beach about three months ago.

The family have a legion of friends in the county who deeply sympathize with them in their bereavement.

One of the three brothers, all of whom had passed the eightieth milestone of life, John W. Boggs, a resident of Long Beach about 14 years, died at 4:40 o’clock at his home, 2616 East Eighth Street. Had he lived until November 19, he would have been 83 years old. His brothers; F.W. Boggs, 85, and J. H. Boggs, 80 reside in Long Beach, and a sister who is in her 74th year, Mrs. Linda Holton, also lives her. The combined ages of the four were 321.

Both Mrs. Boggs and his wife were members of long-lived families. Their parents lived to ripe old ages. Mrs. Boggs is 84 and she has a brother in this city who will be 90 next February.

Born in Pennsylvania, the decedent was a Civil War veteran and a member of Long Beach Post, G.A.R. He lived in Blair Nebraska, where he was postmaster and in Shawnee, Oklahoma, where he engaged in the real estate business prior to coming to Long Beach. He and his wife were members of the Second Presbyterian Church here and Mr. Boggs was a life member of the Masonic Lodge in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Besides his widow, Mrs. Carrie S. Boggs, he is survived by two sons and one daughter, E.E. Boggs, one of the sons arrived here yesterday from his home in Shawnee. Another son, George G., lives in Chandler, Oklahoma. The daughter, Mrs. B.F. Thomas, formerly Miss Josephine Boggs, resides in Ogden, Utah but is now in Long Beach.

Funeral services will be held at 10 o’clock Monday morning from the E.H. Cleveland Chapel, the Rev. H.C. Buell officiating and the G.A.R. having charge.
