John E. Frahm, 82, of Herman, passed away on Sunday, September 24th at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars, Iowa. Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 28th at the Jackson–Peck American Legion Hall in Herman. Rev. Scott Frederickson, PhD. will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at the Herman Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 28 at the Legion Hall. The Mauer–Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars is assisting John’s family with funeral arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may be directed through www.mauerjohnsonfh.com.

John Edward Frahm was born on December 29, 1934, in Herman, the son of Gustave and Dagmar (Jensen) Frahm. Johnny was baptized at the Herman Methodist Church on April 25, 1943. He started elementary school in Herman. His father passed away when Johnny was nine years old. In November of 1946, he and his sister, Helen moved with their mother to Le Mars, Iowa, where Dagmar married Harm Heeren of rural Le Mars. Johnny was confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church near Le Mars. He completed his education at Grant #7 country school near their home.

Johnny enlisted in the United States Army on October 12, 1955. He proudly served at Fort Polk, Louisiana, in the mechanics division. He earned his Honorable Discharge on October 11, 1957. In 1960, Johnny returned to Nebraska. Throughout the years he worked as a farmhand, carpenter, painter and with salvage metal. Everyone was amazed how much scrap Johnny could get on his truck.

He was a member of Jackson–Peck American Legion Post #274 in Herman. Johnny enjoyed Allis Chalmers tractors and historic cars. Johnny enjoyed living life and was pleased with his routine as he traveled his daily route collecting metal. He had a strong spirit and was known for doing things his way. His favorite saying was “We’ll have to see what happens.” In July of this year, Johnny moved to Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars to be closer to his sisters.

He will be lovingly remembered by his sisters, Helen Hitzemann and her husband, Marvin of Akron, Iowa, and Ramona Ludwigs and her husband, David of Le Mars, Iowa; a niece, Sheila Ludwigs of Le Mars, Iowa; a nephew, Jeremy Sjovall, and his daughter, Cassidy of Burbank, South Dakota; and many cousins and friends.

Johnny was preceded in death by his parents and a niece, Brenda Sjovall.
