Former Blair resident Robert K. Johnson, 85, died Saturday, July 3, 2010, at his home in Mesa, Ariz.

Funeral services were Tuesday, July 6, at St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Mesa. Interment was at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, with full honor guard service provided by Luke Air Force Base.

Robert K. "Bob" Johnson was born Feb. 8, 1925, in Missouri Valley, Iowa, to Hans and Lea Johnson. He was baptized June 28, 1925, beginning a long commitment to God - a commitment he remained devoted to throughout his entire life.

He joined the Army Air Corps in 1943. He served as a B-25 waist gunner and flew 25 bombing missions over Germany. He was awarded the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, a European theater ribbon with four battle stars, and a Victory in Europe medal. Following his discharge from active duty, he became a 25-year member of the Army Reserve.

On Feb. 3, 1952, he married Janice Petersen of Herman at the First Methodist Church in Omaha.

He worked for the post office in Omaha before moving to Shelby, Iowa, where he served as postmaster. He retired in 1987 and moved to Blair, then, in 1995, he moved to Mesa.
