Jens Hansen, 85, Succumbs

Longtime Countian Died; Flew Back to Denmark Three Years Ago

Jens B. Hansen, 85, who had been making his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Walter G. Huber, at 302 West South St., died early Tuesday at Memorial Community Hospital.

Three years ago Mr. Hansen took his first airplane ride, a 4,500 plane trip to his native Denmark. He had earlier, in 1898, made a boat trip back to his homeland.

Mr. Hansen, once a rural mail carrier out of Washington, Nebr., had resided in this county since his arrival in Blair in 1890.

The body was taken to the Bendorf Funeral Home. Rites are to be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church. The Rev. H. C. Jorgensen will officiate, with interment following in the Blair Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bertel Bertelsen, Jr., and Eric Knudsen of Washington, Leslie Offen and E.G. Carson, Albert Sunds of Arlington and Harry E. Lund of Omaha.

Mr. Hansen was born at Ostbirk, Denmark Sept. 2, 1871, and after coming here in 1890 lived here since, except for a short time at Humbolt County, Ia.

He and Sine Osterland were married Feb. 28, 1900. She died on June 11, 1949.

Surviving him are a son, James R. Hansen of Bellevue, Wash., and a daughter, Mrs. Walter G. Huber (Anna) of Blair. Another daughter, Ellen, died in infancy.

Other survivors include a granddaughter, Mrs. Eileen Brotherton, and two great-grandsons of Seattle, Wash., also eight nephews and nieces in Denmark. Four brothers and a sister in Denmark preceded him in death.

Note: The newspaper inaccurately had B. as his middle name, but the death date was the same, and the tombstone has P.
