One person is dead after a teenaged driver fled a traffic stop on a county road south of Fort Calhoun on Friday night.

Washington County Sheriff Mike Robinson said a deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding just before 10:30 p.m. in the 2400 block of County Road P43.

Deputies were preparing to search the vehicle when the driver took off north at a high rate of speed.

The deputy attempted, but was unable to catch the vehicle. A few moments later, the deputy came upon the crashed car lodged in a grove of trees in the 4600 block of CR P43 just west of U.S. Highway 75.

The vehicle, which had heavy front end damage, lost control on a curve in the road, entered the west ditch and struck a tree. Lengthy skid marks were visible on the paved road.

Robinson said speed was a factor in the crash.

Jackson L. Potadle, 19, of Fort Calhoun was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The name of the deputy is not being released at this time.

The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating the accident.

"Since it was potentially a pursuit and we're involved and it does involve a fatality, we're going to let them handle the reconstruction of the accident and the investigation," Robinson said.

Law enforcement was on the scene for several hours. The road was closed to traffic.

Washington County Attorney Scott Vander Schaaf has been notified, Robinson said.

Fort Calhoun Fire and Rescue also responded to the scene.
