L. E. Vorhies died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. A. Wilkins who lives west of Blair, last Friday and the funeral was held at the Methodist Church in Kennard Sunday afternoon, conducted by Prof. Patterson, of College View. Burial was in the Kennard Cemetery, near which place he had lived for many years. Mr. Vorhies was past 85 years of age, being born near Mr. Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa in 1841. He enlisted in Co. I of the 14th Iowa Infantry in 1862 and was mustered out the following year for disability. He came to this state in 1864 when DeSoto was a flourishing young city. For several years he helped get out railroad ties for the Union Pacific while it was under construction. In 1867 he took up a homestead north of Blair, which he proved up on and sold, later buying a farm northwest of Kennard, which was his home for many years. He was married to Miss Lillian Burgess in 1878 by W. H. Eller in this city. He moved from the farm to College View and for several winters made his home at the Milford Soldier’s Home. He was transferred to the National Soldier’s Home at Los Angeles, but didn’t remain long for his health began to give way and he wanted to be near his old Nebraska home when Death found him. He is survived by his wife and four children, Claude, of Upton, Wyo., Mrs. Ohpha Hill and Ira Vorhies of College View and Mrs. A. A. Wilkins of this county. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic in Lincoln and of the I. O. O. F. of this city, having joined just a month after Blair Lodge No. 14 was instituted in October of 1869. His body was committed to Mother Earth in the Kennard Cemetery by his brother Odd Fellows from Blair. Mr. Vorhies was an ideal husband and father, a good neighbor and friend, and therefore a good citizen whose long life will not have been lived in vain.
