William Rowe

Published in the Pilot October 6, 1926

William Rowe died very suddenly at his home, the old Norton property on east South Street, at 10 o’clock last night. He went upstairs to bed and had just gotten in bed when seized with a heart attack. His little adopted daughter, Irene, heard him gasp and called to Mrs. Rose and he gasped but twice after she reached his side. He had practically never been sick in his life, but last week had an attack of indigestion. The time for the funeral service has not yet been fixed, awaiting word from his sister’s husband in North Dakota. It will likely be held Saturday afternoon at the house, Rev. Carl G. Bader officiating. Mr. Rowe was born in Virginia, where his parents lived for a short time, June 22nd, 1861. When he was a small boy they removed to Indiana and later to Champaign County, Ill., where he grew to manhood. When about 22 years of age he came to this county and six months later his father and mother came and settled on the 160-acre farm near DeSoto station that was his home up to six years ago when his son, Arthur, married. He was married March 15th, 1890, to Miss Alice Smith, who taught school at Desoto, coming out here from the same county in Illinois. He had two full sisters and one half-sister, all of whom have passed on, he being the last of the family in this country. His father was an Englishman, his mother being the daughter of an English Earl who was once presented to Queen Victoria as a beauty. The family have some of the English heirlooms of the royal family. Besides the wife and son, Arthur, he leaves an adopted daughter, Irene, of who he was very fond of and she returned his love wholeheartedly. Mr. Rowe was a mild-mannered man, gentle and considerate in all his ways, never a harsh word crossing his lips, his wife tells us, during all their marriage life. This is a tribute that can be paid to very few men. He will be greatly missed by many friends who learned to love him for these same qualities of mind and heart. The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of their many friends.
