Margaret Ann McMillan

Published in the Pilot May 19, 1926

Miss Margaret McMillan, whose condition was reported as being very critical with Bright’s Disease in last week’s issue of The Pilot, passed away at an early hour last Saturday morning, May 15th at her home at 600 West Lincoln Street, where the funeral service was held at 2:30 Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. O. U. McProud, pastor of the Methodist Church. Because of her wide acquaintances and long public service the floral offerings were unusually large and beautiful, there being 78 individual remembrances and six group pieces, the attendance large also, there being over sixty cars in the funeral cortege leading to the cemetery. Six of the city and rural carriers served as pallbearers and Miss Gladys Moore sang three hymns unaccompanied. Margaret Ann McMillan was born in this city December 19, 1873, so was in her 53rd year. She was in her thirtieth year as an employee in the post office, having completed her 29th year the 1st of March. When her sister, Jennie, now Mrs. C. H. Robertson, was married she took her place as the only clerk in the post office under the late Thos. Wilkinson. She has been first assistant to the postmaster ever since she went in, which place will now be taken by her brother, Bruce. In all these years she served so efficiently and so satisfactorily that there was never any question of a change, though the postmaster has been changed four times. She was pleasant, accommodating, friendly, punctual, efficient, a tribute few can lay claim to for such a period of service. She built and fitted up a nice modern bungalow on West Lincoln Street, where she lived happily with her mother and sister, Agnes, until her mother’s death three and one-half years ago. Then she gave Agnes half interest in the home and arranged that Agnes should have her interest in case of her death. She also carried $2,000 life insurance that went to Miss Agnes, her only unmarried sister. Margaret was the first of seven children of Mr. and Mrs. Neil McMillan to pass on. The others are Mrs. C. H. Robertson, of this city, Mrs. F. M. Holloway, of Omaha, Mrs. Fred Dickmeyer, of Kennard, Bruce McMillan, of this city, and Wallace of Ft. Calhoun. In early life Margaret united with the Presbyterian Church of this city, and was also a member of the Royal Highlander Lodge. Her place will not be easily filled, but the place left vacant by her sudden passing in the very prime of life has left a vacancy in the lives and hearts of friends and relatives alike that never can be filled.
