Helen was born on July 21, 1941, the 11th of 12 children to Edwin and Marie (Hermelbracht) Anderson in Bancroft, Nebraska. She graduated from Bancroft High School in May, 1959 and married Melvin Johnson of Oakland, Nebraska on August 23, 1959. They were blessed with four children: Lori, Timothy, Leslie and Candace. Helen was a stay home mom and kept the books for Mel’s construction company and worked part-time selling real estate until her youngest started junior high school. She worked at Drake Williams Steel as an associate buyer for 12 years. She then accepted a position with Hewlett Packard as a sales operations coordinator. She retired after 15 years. Helen liked to stay busy, so after a few years of retirement she went to work for Jackson Hewitt, preparing tax returns, and continued until her passing.

Helen was fortunate to be able to stay at home with her children and participate in many of their activities, including watching sports, 4-H, Girl Scouts, school Room Mother and driving to dance classes. In her spare time, she assisted Mel with bookkeeping and design for his home construction company.

Helen was also an avid bridge player, playing with women’s groups and also with Mel in couple’s groups. She was a huge Nebraska sports fan, enjoying football and women’s volleyball. She enjoyed traveling to see her children and grandchildren and also to spend quality time with Mel.

Helen is survived by her husband of 58 years, Melvin Johnson; daughter Lori (Cliff) Valley of San Antonio, TX, son Tim (Tracy) Johnson of Hartford, IA, daughter Leslie (Greg) Kinder of Sanger, CA and daughter Candi Johnson of Omaha, NE; five grandsons: Casey (Melissa) Johnson, Matt Valley, Ian Valley, Shawn Johnson, and Nicholas Kinder; great-granddaughters, Scarlett and Josie Johnson; three sisters, two brothers and numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Lyle, Hyle, Margie, Milton, Odin and Rex.

Our loved ones are still and always will be a part of us. They are the threads in our fabric and we cannot lose their love.—Darcie D. Sims

Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul, And sings the tune without the words, And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard; And sore must be the storm That could abash the little bird That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land, And on the strangest sea; Yet, never, in extremity, It asked a crumb of me.—Emily Dickinson
