Martha Thompson Fletcher (Stone)

Published in The Pilot May 5, 1926

Mrs. Martha Fletcher suffered a paralytic stroke two weeks ago today and last Friday afternoon she passed peacefully away at 1:45 at her home in Dexterville. The funeral was held at the house at 2 o’clock this afternoon, Rev. Arthur Smalley officiating. Burial was in the family lot in the Blair Cemetery. Martha Thompson was born in Pittston, ME., October 13th, 1842, so would have been 83 years of age next October. When she was but a child her parents moved to Augusta, Me., where she grew to womanhood and where she met and married Roland R. Fletcher on December 10th, 1863. Five children were born to them, two of who died in infancy. The surviving children are Mrs. Lulu Cushman, who lives near Herman, Miss. June Fletcher, who lived at home with her mother, and Brian S. Fletcher of Whittier, Calif. She also leaves two sisters and a brother in Augusta, Me., and several grandchildren. An adopted daughter, Mrs. Russell Payne, died November 18th, 1920. In December, 1868, the family moved to this county, living in Ft. Calhoun for two years, then took a homestead in what is known as the New England neighborhood. Later they moved to this city and Mr. Fletcher passed away January 9th, 1890. Mrs. Fletcher was all that a loving wife and mother should be, the interests and health of her family always being put ahead of her own. No sacrifice was too great if her loved ones might be made happier thereby. She was likewise a good neighbor, having a friendly smile for everyone, ever ready to help those in trouble of any kind. The surviving children have the sincere sympathy of many friends, as well as the memory of a wonderful mother.
