Burt James Hammang

Everyone in the community was greatly shocked to hear Sunday of the accidental death of Burt Hammang very early that morning. Burt, with his brother, Joe, and father, had been attending the dance at Johnson’s Park Saturday evening. Mr. Hammang left for home, leaving the boys to follow later, in some way coming out of the park the car they boys were in turned over throwing Joe some distance and pinning Burt beneath the car. They were brought to Dr. Davies’ home where Burt passed away almost at once, the injury being a fracture of the neck. Joe is injured and in a Fremont hospital. The extent of his injuries not being exactly known yet.

Bert James Hammang, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hammang, was born at the home place south of town, May 25, 1916, and here he lived all the days of his short life until the sad accident which called him to the life beyond, Sunday morning, Aug, 1. Besides his parents he leaves 3 brothers and 3 sisters, Loretta, Joe, Genevieve, Arthur, Etta Belle and Warren. Burt was a bright, snappy disposition and his cheery presence will be missed by many friends and the sympathy of the entire community is extended to the family in their grievous loss. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, August 3rd, at the Congregational Church conducted by Rev. Frank Williams after a short prayer service at the home. Interment was in the Arlington Cemetery.

~The newspaper article has his first name, Bert, but his headstone has it spelled Burt.
